11 second films
thinfilms is committed to sharing knowledge, especially in the contexts of media, technical, and visual literacy and has contributed to this end through curating projects such as 11secondfilms.org, involving young learners in friendly, simplified production exercises and, in turn, produces work of seemingly boundless imagination. One example is that clip there. Click and view only a single example: a 16-second stop-motion animation created by 8-year-olds, together on small production teams, in a single, whimsical afternoon.
Demonstrating while tinkering with friendly production exercises and eliminating layers of complexity helps lead us as we learn, with all ages, more than just the processes of making short films. As we play with capturing images and sounds, we discover voices, sometimes our own, while gaining insights into what goes into creating media, the tools we seek fluency in in order to simply communicate better with each other. Meanwhile, we ask questions about them all, taking cues from sources such as the Center for Media Literacy. There are many more resources like these just waiting to be discovered and shared with the future of our own children.
